Why Talking to Students About Cybersecurity—and Success—Matters More Than Ever

Last week, I had the chance to speak with the Cybersecurity Club at Christian Brothers Academy. Great group of students. Smart, curious, engaged. They asked sharp questions—not just about technology, but about business, risk, and how to actually get started in the world. I left that room reminded why this kind of outreach is so important.

At Titan Technologies, we protect businesses from ransomware, data breaches, downtime—you name it. But we’re not just in the business of putting out fires. We’re here to prevent them. And part of that means investing in the next generation because today’s students? They’re tomorrow’s leaders, entrepreneurs, and maybe even our future clients or colleagues.

When I speak to young people, I always try to cover two things:

  1. How to build something for yourself—and do it with integrity.
  2. How to stay vigilant in a world where cyber threats are only getting more sophisticated.

I shared a few stories, offered advice on building a business, and explained why cybersecurity can’t be an afterthought anymore—especially for anyone touching sensitive data, even at a student level.

A couple of the club members, William and Dylan, followed up with this message:

“Hello Mr. Nebb,
We wanted to reach out to thank you again so much for coming and speaking at the club, as we just had our last meeting of the year. We greatly appreciated your presentation and for answering all of the questions from our club members. Thank you so much for showing interest in our club, and for being so informative.”

That kind of feedback means a lot. These guys weren’t just there to check a box—they really wanted to learn. They took notes. They followed up. And that’s what gives me hope.

I’ve said this before: there’s no official board that hands you a license to call yourself a cybersecurity expert. In industries like law or accounting, you pass an exam, you get certified. In IT? You just say you’re an expert. That’s why I think it’s critical to get out there and show people—whether it’s students, clients, or business owners—what it actually takes to do the work right.

We’re proud to serve our clients here at Titan Technologies, but we’re just as proud to educate our community. If you run a club, a class, or a program and want someone to come in and talk real-world cybersecurity or entrepreneurship, reach out. We’re happy to share what we’ve learned—and hopefully help inspire the next generation while we’re at it.

Because the truth is, if we don’t start educating people now, we’re going to be cleaning up a whole lot more messes later.
